Chuc Mung Nam Moi

Chuc Mung Nam Moi means happy new year! Tet is the new year that is Christmas, thanksgiving, easter and new years all rolled into one. I spent five days eating, drinking beer, eating, drinking wine, eating, drinking champagne, eating, drinking whiskey, eating, singing karaoke, eating, eating eating. There are many special foods that are cooked for Tet. Most require extensive preparation. The chief is banh chung cake, a square cake made from rice and pork. I've had this every day since Tet (Jan. 26) I got so much!

I visited many of my students homes. The highlights included visiting Huy's 88 year old grandfather, Chien's beautiful country home and Thu's house for lots of food and karaoke. I love Tet because it's a chance to meet my student's families and eat lots of delicious and unusual foods!
